Millions of South Africans are seeing better access to electricity, housing and plumbing, according to Stats SA’s 2025 household survey. Yet grant dependence remains widespread, with over half of households receiving support and nearly a quarter relying on it as their main income. Analysts warn grants reduce hardship, but do not replace the need for stronger job creation and growth.
SASSA’s Older Persons Grant now pays R 2400 per month to qualifying beneficiaries aged 60 to 74. Beneficiaries older than 75 receive R 2420 per month from April 2026. Applicants must pass the income and asset means test before the grant can be approved.
SASSA has explained how the means test is used to assess social grant applications. The test checks income and assets, including a spouse’s financial position, where the applicant is married. The Foster Child Grant is the only social grant not subject to the means test.
SASSA has confirmed the social grant payment dates for June 2026. Older Persons Grants will be paid first on 2 June, followed by Disability Grants on 3 June. Children’s Grants will be paid from 4 June 2026, according to the official SASSA notice.
SASSA has confirmed the SRD R370 payment dates for May 2026, with payments scheduled for 21–22 and 27–28 May. Approved beneficiaries must check their personal SRD status online to confirm processing and payment details.
